John Taylor, Glasgow Print Studio,
. Glasgow. The title at one oi the pictures
here is The Evil That Men Do and it
might stand tor the theme oi this
exhibition. Certainly it has a grim
resonance in a week when the
atrocities oi two world wars were
marked by another with the bomb at
t Enniskillen. Again and again Taylor
shows images oi bodies — or more olten
traces oi bodies - lying in a tomb. In the
distance rows oi identical crosses
suggest an iniinity oi war graves and in pictures like The Heap or Layer upon
1 Layerthe iull horrors oi carnage and
1 mass graves are conironted head on.
Figures have been heaped into a
pyramid, piled into the ground with no
more dignity than a Iorryload oi lish
and they rot and mingle, one with
another in a huge amorphous mass.

The Calton Weavers: Glasgow Trade Unionism 1787-1987 Until end 1987. The museum is in political mood for this exhibition. re-telling the unsung story of the first martyrs to trade unionism and the movement‘s subsequent course. Ken Currie‘s work illustrating this theme is the first major mural commission from Glasgow District Council since the Banqueting Hall. City Chambers, was completed in the 1890s.

Anonymity is a strong theme. It is the commonality oi suilering that is being stressed and none oi the bodies has individual ieatures. They lie in iamiliar, still-human positions, with bent knees and tilted heads, and more olten than not in couples. Sometimes the iorrn oi the body has become no more than an imprint left on the walls oi the tomb, like a iossil at a lite.
For all that, they are not the most shocking oi pictures. Taylor is dealing with universality rather than reportage and no where is this more apparent than in his use oi colour. Who would, aiterall, think oi painting a coitin sky blue or lemon yellow. They are beautiiul, luminous tones and sometimes the whole picture becomes almost an abstraction oi death. (Sally Kinnes)
