HOME FROM HOME

‘lt‘s more about Scotland than about anywhere else - so I'm very glad it’s coming here,’ says Rona Munro other play ‘The Way To Go Home’, at present being toured by Palnes Plough theatre company.

Munro’s play (already warmly received down South), shows two Scottish glrls accidentally thrown together in Istanbul and mysteriously pursued by a strange American man. She hesitates to call it a thriller- ‘that implies that all the ends are eventually tied up’ - but it has that feel. As it is revealed why the girls are being followed, their friendship develops and they learn not only about Turkey, but also, through contrast, about Scotland. One of them has visited Nicaragua, and the play weaves in flashbacks to her visit- Munro’s interest is in comparing small countries each coping very differently with similar conditions.

‘Ny own experience oi going to Nicaragua made me think very differently about small countries in a multi-natlonally controlled world. Somebody I know suggested to me that if I wanted to find a country that was a complete contrast to Nicaragua, yet in a similar situation, i should go to Turkey. It’s the difference between a country that’s got some kind oi sense oi hope and one that hasn't. In Nicaragua you really have the sense of the people having some influence over what happens to the country- whereas you don’t in Turkey and Scotland.”

m tives, their attitude may be patronising, and she hopes to illustrate why through the multi-perspective of the play and the girls’ experiences. ‘We‘ve got a lot to learn from them really. Particularly in Scotland. The thing we’re brilliant at doing in Scotland is being glorious when it’s too late. We’re very good at being great in defeat. There’s tremendous potential here if we could just get it together.’ Nunro is not pessimistic however. ‘l feel we are just on the brink of it— and I suppose that’s one thing l’m trying to say.’ She lives and works in Edinburgh and has previously done a great deal oi community work and radio drama in both Glasgow and Edinburgh.
