SEASON OF FRENCH SHORTS
Not so much hands across the ocean as hands out of suitcases in Presence Femminine, the French short now confirmed as the winner of the recent season of films from the Brest Film Festival. Directed by Eric Bochant, Presence Feminine was a very popular winner, imaginatively exploring themes of prejudice, friendship, and regret through the surreal story of a young girl who arrives with two mysteriously noisy suitcases to stay with a reluctant friend of a friend. The judges, amongst them prestigious French critic Michel Ciment, actor Daniel Day Lewis and English critics like the Sunday Times’ George Perry, awarded second prize to La Tres Bonne Nouvelle, a newspapers version of the Adoration of the Magi, and gave high praise to Les Arcandiers and D’Apres Maria.
Now the winners are to be screened at BAFTA for possible awards in its short film section. The organisers, already in negotiations with the BBC and Channel Four are hoping that the extra exposure will help gain a wider

Presence Feminine is one of the films to be shown in the Glasgow screening on 12 Nov and D’Apres Maria and La Tres Bonne Nouvelle can both be seen in the 13 Nov screening.
