‘You’ll be here to see the Hothouse Flowers then?’ That’s the question that’s been asked of just about every foreign voice arriving in Dublin overthe last few months, since their live sets started sending ripples through the grapevine. Described in Rolling Stone as ‘the best unsigned band in the world’, Hothouse Flowers have been the toast of the city since long before London Records decided to make them an offer they couldn’t refuse, a very astute move on the company’s part.
Though possibly too late to make a showing in the end-of-the-year polls, Hothouse Flowers have what it takes to be one of the major bands of ’88, judging by the single which is the fruit of their labours solar.
‘Don’t Go’ is a splendid single; an addictive and fiery slab of Celtic soul,

obviously indebted in a big way to Van Morrison, but deserving nationwide recognition nonetheless. Singer/keyboard player Liam D’Moinlai’s dominating piano drives the song along at a cracking pace, his voice a younger and fresher edition of the great Van’s while skilfully avoiding too close a similarity. All in all an excellent song, which bodes well for the Flowers’ live appearances at Edinburgh’s Venue on Wed 4 and Glasgow’s Fury Murrys on Thurs 5.
Support on both dates is Andy White, the Belfast Bard, or ‘Bobby D’Dylan’, as he's occasionally been dubbed, worthy of a headlining position himself, and whom this writer last beheld tapping his foot to the very different music of Fini Tribe in May. (Mab)

Certainly of interest. as they have recently involved Claudia Figueroa on vocals. who is famed for her work on Working Week‘s classic ‘Venceremos‘ (We Will Win) single. Of the six-piece. three members are from Chile. one from Sheffield. one from Belfast. and one. Tony Hinnigan from Glasgow — so there!

Hearts and Minds should appeal to fans ofthe headlining band. as they also have a large batch of top quality songs. as sampled on their debut single ‘TurningTurtle‘.
