The Goo Brothers, Yue (see photo) and Yi, are now three. Alter playing last year as a Guo Duo, they have brought in Xi Lei, who adds percussion to the various bowed instruments, sheng and Chinese llute (Glasgow Arts Centre, Sat 7 Nov). The boys have been doing quite well, especially down in England, where there has been a rise in popularity of so-called roots music - that is, music based on ethnic lorms lrorn any culture - probably to make up for the lack at an obvious indigenous one. Originally over here to study Western music which they play on Western instruments, the brothers specialise in various regional styles using the authentic Chinese folk and classical instruments including the flute (see photo) which uses a small membrane-covered aperture to produce its exotic reedy tone. Hundreds ot recording sessions tor the Peking Film Orchestra, membership of the Orchestra Ot The People’s Republic and research trips to remote provinces have equipped them with an amazing virtuoso skill and repertoire.

On a rare trip up to the remote northern province ot Scotland come the Albion Band, one of the Fairport/Steeleye subsets. The concert
