A Nightmare on Elm Street Part III: Dream Warriors (18) (Chuck Russell, US, 1987) Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Patricia Arguette, Craig Wasson. 97 mins. Freddy’s back, once again proving that on Elm Street dreams can come true, particularly it they're horrific nightmares. Seven disturbed teenagers, the offspring of the original Elm Street vigilantes who burnt Freddy Krueger to death, are brought together in a psychiatric hospital where no one will believe the genuinely destructive nature of their dreams.
No one that is except Dr Nancy Thomson (Heather Langenkamp) herself an original Freddy survivor and now a specialist in dream disorders. With a little help from their friends, group therapy and hypnosis the kids soon discover that they can not only enter each other’s dreams but that once
NIGHTMARE 0N ELMSTREET PART III
there they can take on their own
spectacular dream powers.
And therein lies a major weakness of this particular sequel. Psychological answers to our tears, as suggested in the original Nightmare, are forgotten in favour of the purely physical as the Dream Warriors set 011 on a Dungeons-and-Dragons-style romp through the dreamscape, wielding switch-blades and magical powers. Rather than any potentially interesting ideas being developed they are swamped in an orgy of special effects. And while those effects are frequently innovative and spectacular, they are unfortunately never matched by the acting or the plot, a tact which is most obvious between dreams when we are treated to some particularly stilted and unrealistic slices of ‘real Iite'.
