Five Scottish New Towns Mon 26 Oct—Fri 13 Nov. The New Town was a post-war concept in organised urban living. 1987 is birthday year for three of them. Livingston is 25. Irvine 21 and East Kilbride 40. This exhibition celebrates and has been put together by all five Scottish New Towns.

PAINTERS FROM THE WARWICK ARTS TRUST AND RONALD RAE
369 Gallery, Edinburgh
The new upstairs gallery at the 369 continues to radiate unrestrained colour in an exhibition of three British abstract expresslonists: Atroshenko, Martyn Brewster and Sheila Girling. The artists are promoted by the Warwick Arts Trust in London, one oi the few remaining enclaves championing this attitude to painting.
Celebration and the joy of paint characterize all their work and, within the limitations of colour and form they illustrate the diversity and potential of abstraction. The work is similar in its lyricism but there it stops. With these three artists, the power of abstraction is seen as a constant exchange and transformation of a physical state into a visual, emotional and intellectual state and back again - a parallel to the human condition.
Atroshenko, who pushes and drags masses of colour across the surface, creating slabs and pools, gives us text-book abstraction, with the chalky acrylic rarely achieving its own identity. Girling fixes an opaque organic mass, dappled with colour, over which flows transparent washes, but it is Martyn Brewster who displays the virtuoso hand in his oils. His rich impasto colour emerges from dark grounds evoking sensations of moving water and burning embers. He achieves an intensity and material presence which is totally captivating.

This year‘s show features six specially invited installations (sponsored by the Scottish Arts Council) including work by the inimitable George Wyllie. The room that during the Festival held Richard Wilson’s sump oil trompe l'oeil. 20:50. now has a Kon Tiki-style raft in a sea ofsalt — a Scottish sculpture by Reinhardt Behrens.

Margery Clinton Until Wed 28 Oct. New porcelain with birds, flowers and simple geometries by this Glasgow and Royal College-trained artist.
The small canvases which form part of the variation series, like precious vignettes, whisper and invite moments of recognition. Their colour sensations are all the more intense and intimate because of their size which enables the viewer to envelope them totally. Downstairs, in contrast, Ronald Rae's idiosyncratic images are ascetic and uncomfortable. Dn plain hardboard he scribbles with crayon and pastel, sometimes this is cut to follow a figure or form. All are hung ungracefully with household twine. Nowhere is there any enjoyment of the materials, everything

Trevor exposes the medium in its personal and social contexts. This exhibition takes the form of a seventy frame ‘video strip‘ taken from TV images juxtaposed. superimposed and multiplied on themselves.
Troubled Land Sat 24 Oct—Sat 21 Nov. Photographs of Northern Ireland by Paul Graham, one ofBritain’s foremost ‘new colour’ practitioners. His images ofurban and rural ground in Ulster challanges the standard media image ofthis sensitive spot.

is poor. in ‘Gethsemane’ we are presented with a sleeping elephant, and in ‘Christ's Entry into Jerusalem' we see legs, a walking stick, and a tortoise. What are the meanings of these irreverant images? Man out of harmony? In ‘Mocking Devices’ a frightened woman in a bath is seemingly alone; there in front of her is a set of teeth and part lace, hanging, staring. We are left with many questions. (Marcel O’Connor)
