BANDS INTERNATIONAL
Awatinas are the latest Bolivian band to arrive in comparatively llat Scotland. More at a tradltonal group than regular visitors Rumillaita, they combine ancient Andean lorms with the costume and liesta spirit of contemporary metlzo music. The spectacular six-piece are in Edinburgh Fri 16 Oct. The Oyster Band (Glasgow Sat 17 Oct; Edinburgh Mon 19 Oct) and Whippersnapper (Glasgow Sat 24 Oct) are two of the most popular English bands at the moment. The Oysters are currently enjoying a lot at Radio 1 exposure as Billy Bragg’s backing band on his ‘Spycatcher’ single. To Scottish ears the band's music seems a bit predictable, based as it is on simple English dance tunes, but their arrangements based round electric guitars, fiddle, squeeze box and saxophone will appeal to all the Richard Thompson fans out there. heart they are a good dance band and they bounce the tunes along with easily enough volume and attack to do without a dnim kit. And you won’t find one in Dave Swarbrick’s latest outfit, Whippersnapper. They create a high-energy non-electric music on string instruments with tlddles, mandocello and guitars. Ouite a step from the ponderous tread oi Falrport Convention. The year-old band has proved that acoustic music still has a future among the synths and saxes, their arrangements allowing space for improvisation and the content drawn from anywhere in the jazz/folk! classical mediums. All perlonned with the Swarbrick’s usual exuberant showmanship, clever vocal harmony and exceptional instrumental skill from Martin Jenkins, Chris Leslie and Kevin Dempsey. (Norman Chalmers)
