Aboyne and MacRobert Centre. Stirling. Janet Smith began her company in 1976, developing performance which includes song. dance. mime and most importantly live music. This season. they will be dancing four pieces from the current repertoire. ‘Still No Word From Anton' inspirec‘ by the soap opera and ‘5 Preludes‘ are the work omeith herself. ‘One Fine Day At Court' was guest-choreographed by Ann Dewey. an ex-Janet Smith dancer and ‘Fool’s Day' by Robert North. ex-Ballet Rambert and Smith‘s husband. Scottish Ballet's new studio theatre opens this month with a Gala Opening (21 Oct at 8pm. Black tie. Minimum donation £25). Then. until the beginning of December. three programmes are shown consecutively on Thurs. Fri and Sat evenings. beginning with the Fiesta Programme which consists of Carmen and Spanish guitars and wine in the restaurant. In the Oriental Trio Programme. the company perform La Bayadere, La Peri and Three Dances to Japanese Music. Programme Three goes modern with The Water‘s Edge choreographed by Robert North with music by Ian ‘Jethro Tull‘ Anderson. For You Were Mine choreographed by Lloyd Embleton. Laurie Booth and Toby Sedgwick Wed 21 Oct. 8pm. £3.50 (£3). This is one 9 dance performance not to be missed. To describe Laurie Booth as a dancer is almost to pigeonhole him. so many movement techniques does he have at his command. Sedgwick was a founder member of Moving Picture Mime Show. Mercurial States is an exploration of movement and includes strong visuals in the drawing of Ian Pollock. an illustrator in the vein ofGerald Scarfe. score by Philip Jeck and Andrzej Borkowski

Keith McIntyre and Rotating Dancers Scotland perform It Gala Celebration Thurs 15 Oct at 8pm. £3 (£2). Art. music and dance join to form a performance which fascinates. Rotating Dancers will talk with the audience about their work after the performance. See Glasgow classes for related workshop.

The Territorial army once drilled at 261 1 West Princes Street, Glasgow. But it's a legion of dancers you will see there now, as Scottish Ballet move into the final phase of their new building.
First there was the roof and floor. The hall was derelict, burnt-out by fire and, after purchase in 1979, the basics were tackled. Then a rehearsal studio was opened, large enough for the company to rehearse full-scale ballets like Swan Lake in a space comparable to the big stage at Theatre Royal. No more discovering uncomfortable placing the night or day before a performance. flow the studio theatre is set to open its doors. Originally quite a modest proposal, plans for the theatre ‘grew and grew and grew‘ helped by a Scottish Tourist Board grant of nearly 250,000. 182 seats retract at the press of a button, there is an exhibition/cafe

area and stage size is flexible. All in all, the project is costing nearly 2% million.
With young choreographers and visiting companies in desperate need of a small, experimental dance venue, Scottish Ballet felt it important to get the space open as soon as possible. However, £100,000 is still outstanding on the bill, a sum Nina Havergal is hoping to raise through performances and fund-raising projects like the Scottish Ballet Chairperson appeal which gets your name on a seat for £160.
The first performance in the life of the new theatre will be Peter Darrell's interpretation of Carmen. With flamenco the flavour, we are promised paella and Spanish guitar music after the show. See Listings for details. (AB).

Greg Nash has a special flair for producing work which combines several levels ofdance ability. For the three days previous to this performance he. Kate and Rosina and members of their workshop have constructed a piece out ofset material and formed it into. ifGreg‘s past projects in similar vein are anything to go by. something that is original. exciting and witty.
