Compass Gallery, Glasgow 1 interrupted the Scottish painterJohn Bellany in his London studio just as he was about to start a watercolour. Time before the paint swims on the paper for a quick chat.
The Old Man And The Sea is a new set of fourteen prints published by Paragon Press, made by Bellany at Peacock Printmakers Aberdeen with the help of ArthurWatson and Beth Fisher. Had this been a long-held idea? ‘Well, a lot of my paintings have related to that anyway. I was talking one day with Paragon after the Scottish Bestiary and said that I fancied doing this. It was just a question of waiting till the moment was right.‘ In the end it took six months of ‘full-blooded’ work.
Was there a new project on the go? Bellany answered that one half-jokey, half-disgusted. ‘I hate the word project, It's for graphic design and things like that. ljust paint away like

Mr Rembrandt or Mr Picasso. I don’t have projects.’ Come to think of it, why should an earthy word like project relate to such a spiritual thing as inspiration. Mr Bellany had a point. So instead we talked about his world tour which made impressive listing. Exhibitions opening in Dublin and Sydney in November, one in New York in January and Los Angeles in March. And in a couple of weeks the new prints will make their London debut at the Nigel Greenwood Gallery.
Bellany will be heading off on his travels soon, with studios set up along the way. ‘It's been worth all these years of waiting to have studios all overthe world.’ As his brush is rarely idle, it's a working holiday, which reminded him, he had to get back and stuck into that watercolour.
