Scottish Opera, Theatre Royal, Glasgow.
It is somehow surprising that in its 25 year history, Scottish Opera has never yet mounted a production of Verdi’s Aida. Making up forthis omission in spectacular style is their new co-production with the Theatre de la Monnaie of Brussels directed by Gilbert Oeflo, which opened the Company‘s 87/88 season at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal on Tuesday.
A powerful yet tragic tale ofthe love between Aida, an Ethiopian slave girl (but really a princess) and Radames, Captain of the Egyptian opposition, Oeflo with musical directorJohn Mauceri has created a strong force of soloists, chorus and orchestra (both in spectacular form) infused with
sumptuous sets and lavish costumes.
In the title role, Janice Cairns is a dazzling Aida, although as her lover John Treleavan was somewhat disappointing initially, but warmed to the part considerably as the opera unfolded. Similarly, the Italian Ambra Vespasiani making her British debut as Amneris only started to lose her inhibitions as the drama intensified.
For lovers of grand opera, Aida is a must. The celebratory party of Act II sees the medium at its best. Onstage trumpeters, dancing girls, a slide show, vibrant colours, full chorus were all there. All that was missing was the elephants - but all the other critics seemed to be out in force. (Carol Main).
