The List magazine in association with McEwan’s Lager are offering prizes totalling £650 of musical instruments or equipment to help a new band develop their music. A lull range of instruments and equipment will be available to choose from in Sound Control — one at the leading music stores with branches across Scotland.
FIRST Prize £350 of instruments or equipment
SECOND Prize £200 of instruments or equipment
THIRD Prize £100 of instruments or equipment HOW TO ENTER
To enter you need to put together a cassette of your group playing two or three songs (should be original compositions) and send it in along with the completed application form below by 30 September 1987. The cassettes will be judged by a panel at Bob Last (music publisher and manager); Clive Ford (of Sound Control); a representative from McEwan‘s Lager, and Alastair Mabbott & John Williamson (The List's rock editors).
The winners will be announced and profiled in The List magazine issue published on Thursday 29 October.
NOTES
1. The competition is open to any Scottish based band or singer/songwriter who has not had a recording contract.
2. Cassettes must be clearly marked with a labelled sticker and accompanied with a biography and photo of the band. No responsibility can be accepted for material submitted but it you want the cassette back send a SAE and we will try to return it. 3. Entries must reach The List by Wednesday 30 September.
4. No cash alternative.

o The Warehouse 75 Dunlop Street. 221 1 1-1-1. Normally not associated with live music. there have been recent attempts to provide with the Rock City Club on Thursday nights. This has been primarily catering for heavy metal fans.

o The Mayfair/The Venue 49(1Sauchiehall Street. 332 3872. Should be re-opening in the late autumn after being closed for over a year because of fire damage. Can be hired.
Pubs
0 The Fixx 86 Miller Street. 248 285‘). A recent change of ownership has not stopped the regular promotion of young. and often unheard-of local talent. The Fixx remains one of the city‘s best pub gigs from this point of view — although the small stage and dodgy acoustics don‘t help. Also a good place to be seen —- for those who care about such things. Normally there are about two gigs at week. Recent gigs: Slave Trade. Wyoming. Deacon Blue. Moving Pictures. The Big Sur. Soul Doctor.
O Midas 14211 St Vincent Street. 226 3833. Potentially a good venue. things seem to have been hampered by frequent changes of management promoter etc. Recent weeks suggest a change for the better — with the emphasis being on relatively unknown bands. Thursdays only. Recent gigs: The Big Sur. Soul Doctor. The River Detectives. Filming In Africa.
0 Shadows 73 Bath Street. 221 811 l. Contact: Mike McLean. Bands every Tuesday. Thursday and Friday. 'l‘uesdays are set aside for bands who have never had the privilege of playing Shadows before. while l’ridays are for more established bands. Despite its obvious faults
namely the heavy metal obsession of the crowd —< the fact that such a venue exists is good for bands who have not gigged before.

Ross Fraser Wilkie. South Side venue. which has a large capacity (about 4le). and a large number of regulars which makes this a relatively attractive proposition for its Tuesday night live music slot.

Saturdays and Sundays. with plenty of chances for bands from the Clydebank area. From the start of September there will be a selection of gigs booked through the Cosmos Agency.
