' lternative TV have confounded all and sundry by proving themselves one of the most resilient of the groups that began in the original punk rock explosion. Led by Mark Perry, who left his job as a bank clerk to start the first punk rock tanzine, Snittin' Glue, they became one of the more original and experimental of the new wave of bands, bringing out such classic singles as ‘Love Lies Limp’ and ‘Action Time Vison’.
Right from the start Perry admitted he
didn’t really follow the typical icons of the punk culture. ‘l'm into Zappa and Can and jazz,’ he told Record Mirror in 1977. Accordingly, Perry changed the band’s name to The Good Missionaries and shifted to a more avant-garde jazz

demise,the restless Perry spent time playing drums for Lemon Kittens (Danielle Dax's first notable group) and The Door and The Window, formed a pop group called The Reflections, and found time to release a solo album.
Alternative TV reformed in 1981, recorded an LP which failed to catch on and then broke up again. Sporadic gigs over the next fouryears culminated in a proper reformation in 1985. The current line-up— playing in Glasgow’s 46 West on Thursday 10 and Edinburgh’s Venue on Friday 11 — is Mark Perry on guitar and vocals, Steve Cannell on bass, Allison Phillips on drums and Clive Giblin on second guitar.
