The drums at the Black Watch trick out the rhythm behind Hogties Reel on the second album by Relativity, released to coincide with their current British tour. Titled ‘Gathering pace’ from a song by Triona Ni Domhnaill, it takes the band turther down the same track— layers of crunchy instrumental sound based round the keyboard instruments at clavinet, synths and accordion, warmed up by the tone of fiddle and guitar and the rich, assured Gaelic vocals, sometimes transparent, even cloistered. The band, comprising two pairs of siblings, John and Phil Cunningham oI Silly Wizard and Triona and Michael D‘Domhnaill from The Bothy Band play Edinburgh (7 Sept). In Glasgow's City Halls (6 Sept) the price of the ticket includes a set trom Ossian. ‘No one in the band wants it to be full time . . . but we want to keep the quality . . . I’ve been working with Windham Hill, the New Age label in the States and recording and touring in the band

Nightnoise. No plans to come over here in that line-up though.‘ Michael has been joined in that band by Triona, and they have both settled near each other in the North West US.
Portobello’s John and Phil tourthe UK regularly and Johnny, based in Boston, gets ‘lots of action, musical and otherwise playing in the Raindogs —they used to be Stiff Little Fingers. . . a real rock band.‘ No that Relativity is a tilleted tolk band, their's is a big sound. Triona’s clarinet can be as percussive and bassy as a rock rhythm section and Michael plays strident electric guitar through a surging march setting at a piece by a 17th-century Munster poet. All but one otthe tunes are by tiddlerJohnny or accordionist Phil whose attractive, not quite sentimental slow airs and linger-blurring reels have made him the accordion hero of the age, a nuclear Jimmy Shand.
