0 Gorky Park(BB(‘1)9.30—l1.35pm Dennis Potter scripted this impressive film version of Martin ('ruz Smith's novel. Made in 1983 it starred William Hurt as the Russion detective trying to unravel a murder.
RADIO
In one of radio's most celebrated anecdotes Orson Welles had millions believing that the martians had landed when he made his famous adaptation of HG Wells‘ The War of the Worlds which be broadcast in radio news style. He was one of America's best-known radio actors of his day before his film debut in ('itizen Kane in 1941 and The Shadow Knows, Rd, Fri 4, llam, acknowledges his his great acting style.
Profiling not an individual, but a breed of journalists is David Walker who in his programme Leading Voices. R4. Wed 9. 8. 15pm. looks at the anonymous spokesmen of newspapers. the leader writers. a position he enjoyed himselfon both The Times and the now-defunct London Daily News.
The same week that sees the Proms in full flood with their famous Last Night fallingon Sat 12. R3. 7.30pm (in which ENO Music Director Mark Elder makes his Proms Last Night Debut). also coincides the tenth anniversary of the death of Maria Callas. The occasion is marked by a 1984 recording of Bizet‘s Carmen.

There is another chance to hear two episodes from Scottish writer Ron Butlin‘s very well received first novel. The Sound ofnrv Voice when David McKail reads After a Night Out with the Biscuitmen and Breakfast with a Snowman on R3. Sun 6. 9.50pm and Mon 7. 9.40pm respectively.
The controversial political/cultural crossover is the source of not a little discussion this fortnight. focussing on the two huge countries of the Eastern bloc. Russia comes first with the R3 programme The Two Thaws, R3. Sun (i. 5.30pm. which asks how much further Gorbachev is going than Khrushchev in his thaw ofthe 5lls. Taking part are Julian (iraffy. Lecturer in Russian at the School of Slavonic Studies and a keen follower of Soviet cinema. several Russian writers and human rights activist. Pavel Litvinov and Sergey Baruzdin. editor of one of the leading Soviet literary journals. The following week Kaleidoscope looks at (‘hairman Mao as poet and the literature of('hina in a special programme The East is Read. R4. Fri 18.9.45pm.
