THE TELEVISION FESTIVAL

Mainly intended as an event for T\' professionals. the MacTaggert Lecture is the main public event (27 Aug. 6. 15pm) but tickets are available at the Assembly Room Box Office for somcof the other events. This is the Television Festival‘s first year based at the Assembly Rooms (although some eventsare always field there) which should allow light enterainment producers a field day in signing up new talent. This is probably the industry ‘s most important I'Is' talking shop — and there is always plenty to talk about. The theme this year is the fairlv inevitable one ofthe ‘ relationship between television and government. but manv other topics w ill be discussed ttitt.

THE EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO
Until 29 August. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. Only the Royal Tournament can begin to compare with this military extravaganza. but Edinburgh wins hands down on atmosphere and setting. This is the first year that the Tattoo has attracted commercial sponsorship — from the Glayva Liqueur people — a reflection of the increasingly commercial marketing of the Castle (they have even moved the early morning lonely changing of the guard ceremony to 1pm to tie in with the firing of the gun and to create a public event). Of course the whisky liqueur would also make good protection front the often chilly Edinburgh night air. Wrap up warm!

BEYOND THE FRINGE Probably the biggest event to have missed out on inclusion in The Fringe Programme is the Elephant Tent who. at the last minute and without their partners of last year (Zap. who are in Rose Street this year) are pitching up again in Edinburgh's Hole in the Ground in Castle Terrace. until 30 Aug. with a programme mainly of cabaret. bttt they will also be taking successes that have finished their runs elsewhere - look out for details. Based in a huge disused primary school behind the Royal Mile in Drummond Street renamed The Edge. they are attempting to go it alone with publicity and ticket sales. with events until 29 Aug. EDIBUH SECRETS
Amongst the pavement artists and buslters at the foot of the Mound. you cannot help but notice the dubious talent ofone piper. inevitably sporting a blue shirt minister‘s collar. The Rev Alan Cameron. who has now no official position in the church. is no passing Fringe phenomenon bttt (to the very mixed enthusiasm of the locals) a year-round fixture.

In a city renowned for its beautiful aspect. its cemeteries are amongst the most pleasant and restfttl of places. The living and the dead can mingle happily in Warriston Cemetery which is delightfully overgrown and tumbled down. A short detour from the Water of Leith walkway will take you along meandering paths past many a fine marble slab and much good portrait sculpture.

Greyfriars Churchyard at the sotith end of (ieorge 1V Bridge has seen more than its fair share ofdeath. The Covenanter‘s Prison is here. where a great many Covenanters were imprisoned and martyred in the cause of religious freedom. though it remains a strikingly peaceful and attractive place. As one guide book has it ‘isa beautiful place to stop and munch a sandwich .'
The churchyard is also well known for one of Edinburgh's most tender-hearted stories.
‘( it'eyfriars Bobby". Border shepherd Jock (irey's Skye terrier refused to leave his master's grave when the shepherd died and. fed by the local people lived in the graveyard for 14 years. His loyalty was rewarded with a grave beside his master's and a commemorative statue. erected by Baroness Burdctt-Coutts. an eccentric philanthropist in the city. The name may well ringa hell with Fringe audiences- Bill Burdett-Coutts. Artistic Director of the Assembly Rooms. is her great-great nephew - and a more faithful supporter of the Festival than Bill you could not get.
