Roger Spence's first Round Midnight (which is organised by the Platform Jazz Society which brings jazz to Edinburgh the year round) series of concerts was seven years ago when Jazz at the Festival still needed championing. THE FILM FESTIVAL
Despite no prizes and the battle for attention against all the other Festivals going on around it in Edinburgh. the Film Festival (this isJim I Iickey's seventh as Director) premiered some notable international films in recent years. This year the biggest foreign films seem to have eluded the Festival —- even after 41 years the clout isn't quite there — but the strength of the British line-up is compensation. It may not be Cannes but its still an important date on the Film Festival Calendar. 0 lnforrnation Full detailsof Festival films is contained in the Film Festival programme. available from the Filmhouse. Lothian Road. Edinburgh. price £1.50(£2 by post). and from newsagents around the city. Information also available from the Filmhouse. ()31 228 2688. 0 Tickets The Filmhouse. 88 Lothian Road. This is the Televisions Fesiival’s first year based at the Assembly Rooms (although some events are always held there) which should allow light enterainment producers a field day in signing up new talent. This is probably the industry‘s most important UK talking shop - and there is always plenty to talk about. The theme this year is the fairly inevitable one ofthe relationship between television and government. but many other topics will be discussed I()().

THE EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO
7-29 August. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. Only the Royal Tournament can begin to compare with this military extravaganza. but Edinburgh wins hands down on atmosphere and setting. This is the first year that the Tattoo has attracted commercial sponsorship — from the (ilayva Liqueur people — a reflection of the icreasingly commercial markettingofthe Castle (they have even moved the early morning lonely changing ofthe guard ceremony to 1pm to tie in with the firingofthe gun andto create a public event). Of course the whisky liqueur would also make good protection from the often chilly Edinburgh night air. Wrap up warm!

BEYOND THE FRINGE
Probably the biggest event to have missed out on inclusion in The Fringe Programme is the Elephant Tent who. at the last minute and without their partners of last year (Zap. who are in Rose Street this year) are pitching upagain in Edinburgh‘s I Iole in the Ground in Castle Terrace. from 14-30 Aug. with a programme mainly of cabaret. but they will also be taking successes that have finished their runs elsewhere — look out for details. Tickets will not be available from the Fringe box office but
only from the Elephant Tent box office. ()31 2286613. Advance Information 0579 70515.
0 The Fringe Fringe Society has been formed specifically for ‘all those groups who. for whatever reasom. missed the “official” Fringe deadline‘. Based in a huge disused primary school behind the Royal Mile in Drurnrnond Street renamed The Edge. they are attempting
to go it alone with publicity and ticket sales. with events from 10 to 29 Aug. Their Box office is open 10am-10.30daily. with a twenty-four hour phone reservation service (031 557 5229). They will have theatre. music and art as well as late night cabaret. Perhapstheir most notable production is James Kelman‘s production of his own play. In The Night.
