Always enchantingly well-written. admirably acted and charmingly mounted. the quality at a new Woody Allen picture always seems a sure thing. The current oitering is a nostalgic parade ol amusing vignettes casting an autobiographical eye back to the late 30s and early 40s. when the Golden Age oiAmerican radio reigned supreme in the everyday lives oi millions 01 Americans. Very amiable itis too.
Newcomer Seth Green plays the artist- as-young-whippersnapper. a 12 year-old prankster who hangs on the every word ol 'The Masked Avenger'. whilst Ioveable Mom Julie Kavner and husband-hunting auntie Dianne Wiest date on the tantasy world of sophisticated radio romance. A horde of Woody regulars (Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, Jelt Daniels) also turn up inthe sequences ottering a glimpse of the radio slars' Manhattan Iiiestyles,and cigarette girl Mia Farrow's roundabout route to tame over the airwaves. whilst some homely philosophising from both sides on New Year's eve 1944 shows that the gull between them is really not thatwide.

A maniacally exuberant comic swashbuckler that benefits from Matthau‘s succulent performance but is a pale shadow of similar ventures like The Crimson Pirate and often only pathetically humorous.
