The great Next Big Thing famine celebrates its tenth anniversary with a bumper 1 oo-page edition. it's only the 23rd issue, but scrutinising Lindsay Hutton's precise handwriting on every page at this eplctome it's a wonder he's got this tar without severe eyestrain. Well-written, laid out and printed, and packed with lntormation and opinions, Next Big Thing is an essential purchase tor anyone who appreciates music that calls out from ‘the yawning gap between teenage dreams and hard cash’. as one article so beautliully puts it. All this and a single by Thee Roman Gods as well. No price given, but so to 20 Albert Avenue, Grangemouth, sudingshlre Ella DAT should cover it.

0 MORE READING MATTER to loot: out lorls Ratbeat lntematlonel, a Finnish music paper available tree lrom certain music outlets. inextricably interwoven into the Edinburgh scene. Rote Kapelle are, asthey perceptivelylolted, a Manchester band-in the sense that they've developed their individuality with a studied indiiierence to what’s going on outside. and become a law unto themselves. Their music isn't always pleasingly tunetul, but neither is it the telling tragmentetion oi the current crop on the Ron Johnson Label. Perhaps their most endearing quality is Rote Kapelle’s perverse love ior hummable melodies emerging in the oddest places (and the tact that they shy away lrom Peter Seville-style graphics). Most of the tracks on this mini-LP were recorded tor a John Peel session and sulier irom muriry sound quality, but it should be

music scene is composed oi endless legions of clones.

o The Blood Uncles: Libertine (Virgin). The Edinburgh trio (plus formidable drum machine) have been wowing them at Gaye Bylter-type support slots without any olthe currently trendy and tiresome grebo trappings- and rightly. Where the grebos get by on stolen guitar ritts and oily leathers, Blood Uncles use a battering ram. I’ve got reservations about the LP: the attack, though not constant (the band are already stretching the borders oi their sound), is wearing, and comes across best live. This is mere gulbbling, though, in the taco ot a tracltlilte ‘Danny'. the record's highlight, where the elements come together and lock in place with a malicious synth ripple thetgoes straight tor the central nervous system. Big John’s post-Van liaien guitar is never short oi spectacular. and Wee Jon's voice could be the oitspring at a tryst between Tom Waits and Foetus in the back row at a Birthday Party gig. Colin's bass, throughout. it excellent. it you have trouble waiting up in the mornings, sticlt this on at top volume and try to scrape yourseli oil the ceiling. (Nab)
