CHELSEA GIRL
Nico has spent the last twenty years hovering around the lringes of lame without ever breaking through, though her name is legend, thanks to the perennial appeal of the Velvet Underground. Although she only sang with the Velvets on their first LP, in 1967, that clutch of songs (Sunday Morning, Femme Fatale etc) is the work tor which she is best known; and with the Velvets continuing to be a massive influence on new bands her audience is sell-renewing, a new generation of would-be bohemians, eagerto see a living legend, popping up everyiew years.
Nico has released a whole series 01 albums since those days, sometimes with the help of her old collaborator John Cale, sometimes not, and though she still sings old Lou Reed songs occasionally, the chanteuse has tollowed her own path. This can mean lairly demanding listening (who, who was there, can forget a seemingly endless set at the old Nite Club, her
low, cool Teutonic voice accompanied only by her hands at the harmonium?), but like all such figures she attracts incredible devotion — one punter on her last Scottish tour tried to prove his by slashing his wrists in front of the stage. On this tourshe is being backed by Eric Random and The Bedlamites, from
Manchester (like her last backing group The Invisible Girls). where the tamed ex-resident at New York's Chelsea Hotel seems to have settled. Herjaunt outside the city takes her to Edinburgh’s Venue on Saturday 25 and géasgow’s Daddy Warbucks on Sunday
to boot.
