THE RISE OF STIRLING
The eleventh Stirling Festival promises to be the biggest, brightest and best yet, with over 350 events in almost 100 venues— Britain‘s third largest arts festival.
Big names abound, from George Hamilton IV to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, via comedy group, the Bed Stockings, saxophonist Tommy Smith (see feature) and Alan Price. Among four world and three Scottish premieres are Boughcast Music Theatre with James Kelman‘s new play ‘In The Night‘ (premiered at the BP Young Directors‘ Festival earlierthis year) and Balloonatics Theatre Company, with ‘Citizens', adapted from the Cyclops episode of James Joyce's ‘Ulysses'. The spirit of the Diggers is fresh in Gerard Winstanley Productions' ‘The World Turned Upside Down', an eighteen-character, one-man show. Furtherhighlights should be Artlab UK's ‘Frankenstein‘, The Two Marks and Black and Baddiel in a double bill, comedy from Beg Cattersmole Stolemepig and Bolivian folk music from the much-loved Bumillajta. More music comes from Blues 'n‘ Trouble, The Proclaimers, Love and Money and Bunrig.
The Stirling Festival certainly isn’t just a paddock for Edinburgh thoroughbreds to parade in before the big metropolitan event, however. It has a character all of its own, based on the all-pervading community spiritolthe
jamboree. Local talent is showcased in Stirling Youth Theatre’s unique presentation of ‘Power and Passion - A Life of Mary Queen of Scots‘ at the Wallace Monument and in Edible Theatre Company's double-bill of
innovative new plays. Rhythm and soul combo ‘The Misfits‘ and the rousing ‘Sinister Silver Stetsong‘ lead a variety of local music.
But if is in workshops and residencies that the true spirit of Stirling’s Festival is to be found. Welfare State International will lead the way again with music and dance workshops and performances; Grand Union Orchestra are offering workshops based on African and South American music styles.
