An American Tail (U) (Don Bluth, US, 1986) With the voices of Dom De Luise, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Plummer. 81 mins. In a principled stand against falling standards in animation, Don Bluth and ten of his closest colleagues resigned from the Walt Disney Studios in 1979. As a prolific independent for television and cinema, Bluth was responsible torthe feature-length Secret Of NIMH and now, in his first collaboration with executive producer Steven Spielberg, has crafted a charming children‘s cartoon with the emphasis on traditional storytelling and richly detailed fine animation. The result is a Disney classic by any other name.

than justify Bluth‘s pursuit of excellence in animation and there are some truly magical moments like the first sighting of the half-constructed Statue of Liberty.
The film is, of course. sentimental and cute but not unbearably so and displays such a freshness of characterisation and the influence of a complete perfectionist that it should win over all but the hardest of hearts. (Allan Hunter)
