Glasgow— Locomotive Builderto the World Until Tue 30 June. Just up the road from the derelict railway works and surrounded by industrial and domestic ground now grassed over. Springburn Library houses Glasgow‘sonly community museum. Between 1865 and 1962 Glasgow exported 18.000 locomotives to over 60 countries in every continent. These impressive statistics are borne out in an exhibition at Springburn on the locomotive industry which once made this area buzz with life. Mainly photographs with lots of interesting text.

Third Eye Centre, Glasgow
In gallery two at Third Eye Centre Veronica Ryan‘s sculpture lies quietly expectant on the floor. Everything is low. There are no thrusting angles and no sharp edges. The walls seem very white against the murmur of bronze and grey and the splashes ol cobalt blue.
A giant pod rustling with seeds rocks to one side as it ready to spill out its contents. A long sheet of lead pops with scooped-out bronze shells. The built-in percussion is silent in the gallery but drums in your head.
Heavy material like lead and clay draw the sculptures down to earth, the most basic and ancient symbol at creation and lertility. All around us the most commonplace objects are vessels tor lite—seeds, vegetables, pulses. crysales, even our own bodies. Ryan uses the lorm at these husks to create sculptures of great potency, which like standing stones, have no beginning and no end, an inlinity oi creativity.

Next door, two young artists lrom Niirnberg paint large canvases. Coming trom Ryan’s shell, Peter Angermann’s images seem coarse and brash. And they are. Angermann looks out into the world which humans have invented to suit themselves. Nature, like the seven whales he stacks on an inhospitable beach, is stranded. Rural scenes are ploughed by little red tractorsw while a big blue beetle sits lazily under the pink mushroom ol Chernobyl. The cartoon comedy at it all creates a veneer tor the chaos underneath.
Michael Reiter looks back to more primitive and more harmonious states. Figures are camouflaged in pattern and colourwhich blend with their background. As in Ryan’s sculpture, though less insistently, natural rhythms are lound. In ‘Autumn’ a red triangle stitched in blue beats out the memory at that season. (Alice Bain)

John Muir’s High Sierras-A Watercolour Diary by Tony Foster Until Sat 1 1 July. He‘s taken R.L. Stevenson‘s route through the Cevennes and Thoreau‘s wander through England. This time it‘s John Muir‘s High Sierras. Muir was an environmentalist born in Dunbar who lived in 19th-century America most ofhis life.
