Alex Sternbergen (Fonda) is the kind of fading Hollywood beauty that is probably all too familiar around the pools and beauty parlours of LA. Hercareer is behind her, her marriage a facade of mutual convenience. Solace comes in the form oi a jumbo vodka bottle, companionship from the latest casual pick-up. One morning she awakens in unfamiliar surroundings with another strange bedfellow from the night before. Unfortunately, the gent in question is splattered with blood and a large knife is prominently lodged in his chest. Alex suffers from periodic blackouts and the question arises oi whether she has committed murder or whether she has been set up.
The traditional thriller/mystery aspects oi The Morning After are the least original or interesting elements of the film. As a distraught Fonda flees from a horrific situation she encounters

Bridges' sympathetic, disabled ex-cop and their relationship develops into the core of a meandering narrative. Two vulnerable outsiders in a world where wealth and success are everything, their mutual discovery and lonely passion are entirely credible and well played by both actors. Unfortunately, the altogether more mundane question of did she or didn‘t she keeps intruding and the two strands are never satislactorialy entwined. It is patently obvious that she didn’t and equally apparentwho is behind the deceit.
In his first West Coast production, Lumet brings a bright-eyed stranger’s clarity to his view of Los Angeles and encourages Fonda to give another outstanding performance, revealing facets of her persona rarely seen before. It’s just something of a lingering disappointment that the whole is never the sum of some individually rather distinguished parts. (Allan Hunter)

Transcendent tale of mystical mayhem from the Far East has an ordinary citizen from a sleepy town outside Peking drawn into a questing adventure that is to take him far from home. King llu won a prize at Cannes in 1969 for ‘technical achievement‘ and indeed his film contains some of the most staggering swordplay ever to grace a screen. as well as a finale that leaps into an astonishing. haunting visual exploration of Zen Buddhism.
