We travelled to the next set of traffic lights in silence but then a 750cc courier weaved past and he muttered a monosyllable. I said they seemed to be breeding like flieszl had even seen one with a skateboard. ‘Terrible.’ the driver said and for what seemed no logical reason launched into a story about a hip operation he‘d had at Barts. He was better now thanks to ‘J.P.R.' It sounded like a new detergent but 1 enquired anyway after its healing properties. ‘Nah. it's not a drug. mate. it‘s the old Welsh rugby full-back. J.P.R. Williams.‘ ‘()h.‘l said. Apparently. the former darling

Idon't know about life but I’m hacked offwith London. I was there last week. threw up and came back. It‘s a disgusting place and King‘s Cross is about as excremental as you can get with commuting movers and shakers hurrying past literally legless guys begging for the price of a cup of tea beneath the electronic timetable. Litter is everywhere as is the putrid smell of gas and. thanks to the ludicrous way they have ofselling houses, estate agents‘ boards. The whole city looks like an overgrown department store in the midst ofa fire sale.
Everything is up for grabs and everyone is on the move. even the taxi driver who took me to the British Museum. All I wanted was a
reasonably private public lavatory but I told the driver I was in the midst ofdeep and meaningful research on a topic which now escapes me. In London you can play out your fantasies; I‘ve even toyed with the idea ofwearing the Liberty bow-tiel got for Christmas when I'm in town but I always chicken out. ‘Which part ofthe country are you from. mate‘." the driver asked. I told him. ‘Nice up there'?‘ It was my turn to ask a question. ‘So where are you going to move to‘." He had his heart set on the Isle of Wight which he said. lingering over the ‘oo‘. was rural. ‘Be a change from this. ' I said.
We were becalmed in Oxford Street in the rainy season. ‘Bloody right.’ he said. It was the pressure
