Miss Julie and The Oltcomer, Tron, Glasgow.
For most people the social background to Strindberg’s ‘Miss Julie‘ —the relationship between the servants and masters at nineteenth century Swedish rural aristocracy— may not appear immediately relevant to modern day Britain. But Lawrence Boswell, arriving as director at Cumbria’s Pocket Theatre a year ago, was struck by a similarity.
‘It's taken about a year to get hold or what this place is about,’ he says on the phone from Cumbria. ‘But very ditterent conllicts are still going on here than are going on in the city. They're still about kind ol leudal landlords and leudal behaviour—the background at Strindberg's play struck me as a good parallel.’
He lighted on the idea at mounting a double bill: Strindberg‘s ‘Miss Julie‘, with its story at the disastrous passionate relationship between a young lady and a servant, and a new play exploring the particular tensions at today's Lake District—tensions that are largely to be lound between the 'Iocals‘ and the increasing number 01 rich, tormerly city-dwelling, outsiders.
‘There are some very big economic decisions lacing this place,’ explains Boswell. ‘A whole new set at economics is heading up the M6’.

‘1 moved to Wales 15 months ago and was quite conscious anyway at being an urban writer. I suppose it galvanised me into some sort ol analysis about what we tell moving to an area that is nearly tour hours from London and the tensions that exist there between local person and stranger.’
The class tensions he has also discovered to be similar, ‘There‘s almost the creation of a new generation ol servants- it you’re local, you tend to be working in service industries, like tourism.’
Belore living in London lor 12 years Cox lived in Merseyside and the project also brought home to him that the majority or contemporary writers are analysing urban problems: ‘People in cities tend to write tor people in cities about people in cities’.
Though the story and style of ‘The Oltcomer’ will be very ditlerent trom that at ‘Miss Julie’ itwill echo Strindberg‘s play in some themes and Cox has also lound the writing a tascinating exercise in getting into another writer's mind. For his next play, however, he returns to the crisis at urban man, with a play lorthe National Theatre called ‘The Devil‘s Bottler‘, that Cox describes, succinctly, as a ‘hellish broth at lite in London's East End.’ (Sarah Hemming).
