Evil Dead ll: Dead Before Dawn (18) (Sam Haimi, US, 1987) Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks. 85 mins. Just when you thought it was safe to go back to a ramshackle hut miles from nowhere with a cellarful of flesh-craving zombies. . . This wacko sequel is a continutation of events from the original, controversial gorelest, with the stoic Bruce Campbell, after having dismembered all his friends because of their embarrassing problems with demonic possession, now joined by the daughter of the archeologist whose research has aroused all this undead activity to try to put an end to what her father started. Never before in the history of human conflict has so much been chopped into so many little iffy-bitty pieces by so few. Splenditerously amusing it is too, for Rami has altered the flavour from the first film's gruelling relentlessness to one of surreal, ultrablack humour. You want barf-out laffs — try our hero's fascinating tactical conflict with his own dismembered hand, or his

- 3 touching reunion with his deceased err-girlfriend’s head, a vice and a chainsaw. True, this sort of material is pretty harsh in conventional terms, but imagine a Tex Avery cartoon brought to vibrant life and you get some idea of the tone of the proceedings, crazed but essentially harmless.

legendary nastiness - this one you can watch between meals without losing your appetite. Long-suffering shows a remarkable talent for both knockabout pratfalls and wry one-liners, whilst the film's energy is constantly sustained by Raimi's hyperactive camerawork. A knockout combination, and smart trash hip hit of the year, no doubt. Pass the popcorn.
