HENRI GOETZ

The American-born Goetz had early ambitions to be an electrical engineer but changed his mind, moved to Paris and decided to become a painter instead.
Atthetime, inthe1930s, the vogue was tor surrealism and both painters and poets gave themselves over to the supremacy of the unconscious and dreams.
From the ouset, Goetz was as much attracted to the mechanics ol painting as he was to its philosophy. Perhaps it is tor this reason that he shows such a strong a systematic approach to composition and a willingness to experiment with technique. He was also more drawn to abstract painting than to the surrealists’ critical and ominous re-appraisal ol the objective world.
Pictorial space has been radically changed. The inlinite horizons ol the 19th century are no longer appropriate, nor is the soliditied space investigated by the Cubists. Goetz, highly articulate with both rhythm and colour, uses a deliberately shallow space which emphasises breadth. Freed lrom

The star of this show has been brought in from Vienna — a magnificent James IV Book off/ours. though it will undoubtedly be overshadowed by the dramatic appeal ofa letter written by Mary to her brother-in- law. Henri 111 of France. at 2 o‘clock on the morning ofher execution. Centring on the queen. the exhibition will also show the impact of the Stuarts on artists through the centuries — court poems made for Mary during her lifetime contrast with those written in this century by poets like Hugh MacDiarmid and Alan Bold.

Picasso, a lifelong lriend, seemed to never cease working and once whilst with him on the beach appropriated Goetz’ abandoned socks as sculpture, leverishly lilling them with wet sand and modelling them till they tell apart. From 1916-21 she was based at the Garden and drew the mounting collection of Himalayan rhododendrons which today includes over 400 species. The 25 watercolour studies show the range of her work — from the detail of a stamen. as furry as a bumble bee. to a branch of leaves and waxy flowers. only partly coloured. leaving her fine line drawing exposed.
