ELECTRIC SHOCK
Tonight At Noon are Peter and Gavin Livingstone with Michael Doyle. They look more like rock musicians than your average folk band. Sound like it too. The difterence is that coming from a traditional music background, the rhythm programming on the drum machine and the use and voicings ol the synthesisers are effective and somehow suitable. The music certainly has an electric effect on an audience, whether an ancient song reset, jigs and reels, ortheir own enigmatic compositions. Weird electro folk? Electronic music for Scots? See for youself on the big stage at Edinburgh’s Meadows Festival (7 June) and Glasgow later the same evening.
Also appearing at the Meadows on the same day are Miro, the uninhibited folktour from Edinburgh by way of Brittany; Jiveass Blues and Boogie, and the superb jazz of Edinburgh’s own Tommy Smith on tenor sax with his american-based band Forward Motion.
The Desperate Danz Band make it to Glasgow (31 May) and Edinburgh (1 June). Part ceilidh, part stage show— ‘The Lang Beel’ celebrates the endless ability or necessity of the Scots to boogie on down—from medieval circle dances, reels and country dances,

polkas, waltzes and quicksteps to rock and roll. And with some fine singing. A callerwill sort you out ityou need help.
Ted Hawkins (Glasgow 3 June) shot from Californian obscurity to cult status in Thatcher's Britain in no more than a year. A fifty year-old black guy with a guitar and a collection of his own songs, he is an unlikely hero for today’s Radio One audience, but it was Andy Kershaw, Bl ‘roots’ music presenter, who recognised the response to his records being played on the air, sought him out at home in LA, and convinced him that playing concert halls in England was better than pavements on the Venice waterfront. He sings with a charge in his voice, but it's not blues, more of a cross of gospel, country and soul with shades of his old hero Sam Cook. (Norman Chalmers)
