With the comforting regularity of tradition, early June marksthe opening or the SNO‘s Summer Proms in Edinburgh. Giving six concerts at the Usher Hall, closely rolowed by fourteen in Glasgow, the SNO is gallantly ottering a real something-lor-everyone choice of programmes. Enterprisingly picking up the popular concept ot themes, SNO General Administrator Stephen Carpenter has gone for Rain, Steam and Speed, explaining his move by saying ‘I thinkthatwhen one‘s planning a season of six orlourteen concerts it’s much easierto endow the whole series with a theme.’ How this one though? ‘I was speaking to what was then a potential sponsor, British Rail’s Intercity. and trying to think what sort ot programme I could otter them. Somehow, I was reminded of Turner’s painting and devised a programme which Intercity are in tact sponsoring. Then I thought I would apply Rain, Steam and Speed to the whole series and that’s how the theme tor the Proms came about.’ On close inspection, just about all the music somehow or other does in tact tit into this theme, some of it easierthan others. As Carpenter says, ‘For rain, the first thing that sprung to mind was Land 01 The Mountain And The Flood. And then Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade, which has a storm. James Loughran
actually found a piece called, Rain, Steam and Speed and that just had to go m.‘
Naturally, that most lamous thriller Murder On The Orient Express couldn't be missed out and the Suite of that name by Richard Rodney Bennett (see photo) is pertormed in the same concert as Villa Lobos’ Little Train 01 The Calpira. Bennett also presents Fascinatin’ Rhythm with Marian Montgomery in a special cabaret concert leaturing the music or George Gershwin, marking the 50th anniversary of his death.
