meet their stern grandfather. A gentle. humanistic drama seen through the sentimental eyes of remembered youth. Glasgow; GET

0 That Was Then. . . This Is Now(15) (Christpher Cain. US. 1985) Emilio Estevez. Craig Sheffer. Kim Delaney. 101 mins. Orphaned teenager Estevez clings desperately to his friendship with his adoptive brother Sheffer. the one constant in his insecure world. When Sheffer‘s maturing interests inevitablyshift towards the opposite sex, the angst-ridden Estevez is beset with petulant jealousy and outright hostility at the threat he perceives to their relationship.

Proflific young clever clogs Estevez also wrote this intense adaptation of the Susie Clinton novel and the result is a variably but watchable rummage through the familiar terrain ofadolescent coming ofage. Edinburgh: Filmhouse O Therese (PG) 3*: (Alain Cavalier. France. 1986) Catherine Mouchet. 90mins. 'I‘herese Martin was a young Carmelite nun who died of tuberculosis in 1897 and was declared a saint in 1925. and Alain Cavalier’s film which won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1986 and later swept the boards at the French ()scars. far from drowning in cloying religiosity depicts her life as a fairly ordinary one. Five-star animation enlivens this otherwise monotonous and talkative version of the Raymond Briggs book in which an impossibly naive elderly couple face the challenge of the nuclear age with the same spirit that brought them happily through the blitz. Glasgow; (irosvenor 0 Wise Blood (15) (John Huston. US. 1979) Brad Dourif. Harry Dean Stanton. 108 mins. Brad Dourifis brilliantly cast as religious maniac Hazel Mote in John Huston‘s careful screen adaptation of Flannery ()‘Connor‘s fervid and disturbing story of faith in the deep South. as a young man sets himself up as The Church ()fGod Without Christ.
