David Cook paints in hot colours. Even green and blue have a slightly molten look. Expressionist is his style with large heads, waving trees and staring eyes. But angst has been pared down to a minimum. The paintings are liberal with the oils, energetic but not disturbing.
Whilst Cook works hard to iind a flowing way with his medium, in some paintings he only makes it hail way. The sky in Two Poplars and Tree oi Lite
‘ . '1‘, _ 1.7 ‘ \i _ if. is clumsy and the two large portraits lack any real power. Colour, too, can get In his way. The naked red body in ‘Found Myseli In A Field’ stands apart lrom a wonderiul background of trees and what looks like classical building. It is were only possible to peel the iigure oil to reveal a complete landscape.
In ‘Sacriiice' there is less spatial limbo. Here the red figure, in identifying more closely to the rest oi the composition, has more impact. (Alice Bain)
