SOME JAZZ
Two Glasgow concerts collide on 17 May, but a choice should prove painless. PianistJacgues Loussier’s treatment oi Bach seems, like the Swingles Singers, a hangover from the innocent early Sixties, but has won him huge album sales overthe years, albeit with Johann Debastlan’s input somewhat more absorbing than Jacques' improvisations. Bach on the road in a new trio, with Andre Arplno (drums) and Vincent Charbonnier (bass), the old lormula is again delighting audiences. John Harle's Berliner Band (17 May), is a bold bending oi the rules, and lesbians a distinctively modern music, borrowing lrom most 01 this century's serious and popular idioms, including jazz. A superb classical wind player, John Harle leads on saxophone.
American band leader, pianist and composer, Gil Evans is the greatest living jazz arranger, responsible lor three decades at quality recordings including some tremendously innovative albums lrom Fillies Miles Davis, Boplicitythrough to Sketches of Spain. Always awake to contemporary sounds he was working with Jiml Hendrix at the time at the guitarist's death, and only last year he scored the film Absolute Beginners. After a big celebrity concert party in London lor his 75th birthday, he brings his orchestra to Edinburgh on 15 May.
Al Cohn (Edinburgh 22 May) (see photo) has long been admired by other musicians, irom his long spell playing tenor sax beside Stan Get: in Woody Herman's big band, throughthe lean years writing show music tor the American media, to a re-emergence in the Seventies’ upsurge ol interest in modern jazz. From his early vibratoless ‘Presidential' tone has emerged a luller, latter attack, and whether blowing standards, originals or bop, he continues to swing.
