Desert Bloom (15) (Eugene Corr, US, 1985) Annabeth Gish, Jon Voight, Jobeth Williams, Ellen Barkin. 106 mins. Following Stand By Me and My Lite As A Dog comes another impressive evocation of a 503’ adolescence in the shape of Eugene Corr’s debut feature Desert Bloom. In Las Vegas nearthe Nevada nuclear testing areas, the drama, set in the first year of the decade, focuses on a 13 year-old girl's (Annabeth Gish) troubled relationship with her disturbed warveteran father (Voight), and the family tensions aroused by the visit of her mother’s vivacious sister (Ellen Barkin) for a 42-day quickie divorce settlement. Parallelling the domestic lrissons is the run-up to and linal nearby detonation of the Bomb; a spectace innocently watched by the folks tucking into a hearty breakfast on the verandah, and one which lifts the proceedings out of the rut of tamin problem pics.

Looking back to a special summer in 'his youth. middle-aged writer Dreyfuss recalls the camaraderie of his childhood chums as they brawled. bragged and traded ingenious obscenities during a vital weekend in
story oi lost innocence, tor a girl, a family, and a country’, and it’s a description as succinct as it is accurate. And without ever appearing schematic or contrived, the piece does indeed work beautifully on these three levels. A good ear for dialogue and immaculate performances all round (notably Miss Gish, sensitive but not cloyingly precocious) give this family an authenticity that renders their turmoil convincing. The payoff is that our sympathy for these touching, ordinary people makes the climactic mushroom cloud a vision even more chflhngthanusual
Honest and satisfying, but never worthy, Desert Bloom isthe sort of small-scale, high quality independent picture we should be doubly thankful for in these days of mega-budget, mini-inspiration over-hyped Hollywood pap. By no means the llashiest movie released this year, but a safe bet for an evening well spent. (TrevorJohnston)

Preposterously plotted and only modestly entertaining Trekkie saga with the Enterprise lot travelling back to 1986 San Francisco to pick up a couple of humpback whales which will for reasons best known to the scriptwriter save the 23rd-century Earth from imminent destruction. US. 1985) Emilio Estevez. Craig Sheffer. Kim Delaney. 101 mins. Orphaned teenager Estevez clings desperately to his friendship with his adoptive brother Sheffer. the one constant in his insecure world. When Seffer‘s maturing interests inevitably shift towards the opposite sex. angst-ridden Estevez is beset with petulant jealousy and outright hostility at the threat he perceives to their relationship.
Prolific young clever clogs Estevez also wrote this intense adaptation of the Susie Hinton novel and the result is a variable but watchable rummage through the familiar terrain of adolescent coming ofage. Heist artists Burt and Kirk are released from Sing Sing after a thirty-year stretch and plan one last job. Amiable entertainment with practised mugging from the old codgers. Police Trooper Jack Deth from 2247 travels back to 1985 to eliminate the ancestorofa mystic whose zombie-like followers are a threat to society‘s well-being. Spirited ‘8‘ movie mating of Blade Runner and The Terminator in the best punk noir style. Edinburgh; EUFS 0 When Father Was Away on Business (18) (Emir Kusturica. Yugoslavia. 1985) Moreno De Bartoli. 136 mins. Yogoslavia during the turbulent 1950s is the setting for this affectionate portrait of family life. the surprise recipient ofthe Grand Prize at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival. Overlong and unassuming. this ambles along entrancing the patient viewer with good humour and perceptive observations.
