adaptation of ‘Gillespie’, the novel by Victorian minister John Macdougall Hay, simplifies character and plot. Yet the themes of the novel are powerfully presented in this dramatically riveting production by Borderline.
Avarice is the central theme, explored through the character of Gillespie Strang (John Murtagh), store-owner in the lishing village oi Brieston, who, in accordance with the lamin curse, tyrannically oppresses the villagers and his iamily, in his blind greed for wealth. Re is opposed by his intellectual son and the kindly village doctor (well played by Alec Westowood and James Gibb respectively) but does not meet his match until the superb conflict with Margaret Galbraith, llerce with desire to avenge her husband’s death, excellently presented in a sinister, resolute iashion by Juliet Cadzow. Alison Peebles plays Gillesple’s wile with conviction, coping well with the melodramatic decline lrorn her restrained desperation to be loved, to raving drunkenness reminiscent of
Rochester’s mad wile.
Under Morag Fullarton’s lively direction, and aided by Rab Randielgh’s wonderful folk music, the cast of only eight succeed in creating a vibrant lishing community. The whole is a bold, chilling evocation — as relevant now as then — oi the selfish pursuit of capital at the expense of others. (Ness Raison)
