o SPRUCE UP THAT OUIFF and kick oii them blue suede shoes! You thrilled to their Ready Steady Go appearances over twenty years ago, you chilled to Tutti Fruttl (to be repeated as soon as the schedules allow), and now The Maiestics are back on the road again! Well, minus Danny, who seems to have other fish to fry (can’t imagine what could be more important, though), but at a warm-up gig at Pencaitland, Vincent, Bombs and Fud joined Tam White and The Dexters on stage for a few numbers, triggering the wildest riots known in Pencaitland since the local film club hired The Blackboard Jungle in the late 50s. Impressed with the young upstart White, the remaining Majestics plan to tour with him in late May, ably assisted by their faithful roadie Dennis. This one could run and run . . .
e A SOLID STREAM OF ABUSE greeted a disappointed pop back The Legendi, when he jumped onstage to accompany the new slimmed-down Shop Assistants through a version oi The Beastle Boys’ monster hit Fight For Your Right. A clear sign of progression from the days they used to encore with Motorhead’s Ace Of Spades, The Shoppies may have moved with the times, but The Legend! hasn’t cottoned on to the fact that there’s still hordes oi people braying iortheir money back afterthe last time he played in Edinburgh. . .
0 THE SHAMEN HAVE SOME Scottish dates lined up for later in the month- but are at the moment without instruments to play them until either the insurance companies get their act together or the rotter(s) who pinched them from outside Abbey Road studios hands them back.
ALBUMS
o Lowlife: Diminuendo (Nightshi'ft). Lavish and beautiful gold-embossed sleeve, making this West Lothian guartet’s third long-player a very handsome prospect, so how does the music inside measure up? Now, I’ve never been the most popular reviewer in the Lowlife camp, but even leaving aside the thought that the future of my kneecaps may depend on what I write here, it has to be said that what’s on the grooves measures up very well. Admittedly, there are echoes oi the Cocteau Twins (and why not, since bassist Will Heggie’s style defined a great part of the Twins’ sound), especially the guitar part on the track From Side To Side, and the singer still sounds like he feels he should be delivering a sermon from the Mount, but there’s a lightness and deitness that the old Lowlife never had. They’re no longer clutching their instruments till their knuckles turn white, and is that a cheery violin i hear at the start oi side two? Diminuendo is a wander (even restful at times) through a dreamlike
landscape, and should merit at least a listen. - 0 Deal Heights Cajun Aces: Les Fiammes O’Enier (Temple) From Scotland, but taking their inspiration from the swamplands of Louisiana, one of the country’s best nights out transfer their live act onto vinyl. Fiddle, accordion, veste irattolr, bass and drums canter at a cracking pace through 13 rollocking great tunes, all, with the strictest adherence to authenticity, in French..Pretentious, moi? Well, not really. British folk music is closely related to salon and sydeco, so what’s a quick swap of language between friends? The answer is, no barrier at all, whether your interest is caiun, Scottish and lrish folk, country and western or even African music, so universal is the Aces’ appeal. In a world where Paul Simon can sell a billion trillion copes of Graceland. Isn’t it about time these men were stars?
0 Two Helens: Silver and Gold (Sharko 2) “N kill my mother for silver and gold' they cry, while taldng us back to a time when lggy, Lou, and Alice Cooper were kings. Doesn’t sound too different from nowadays, really. Actually, the B-slde is better, showing a toughening up from, and a more traditional approach to their previous vinyl outing. Possibly the next Crows.
o The Thieves: Talk Your Hds Off (Planetarium). A rive-piece Glasgow band who seemingly want to grow Into boring musos. Their first single, but they already sound so weary and without motivation. This one piods, and the arrangement lends uie song nothing.
0 The Night Swimmers: She Starts Laughin (Witness). This Is more like it. At least the Swimmers sound like they’re enioylng themselves. As for the B-side, well, it’s a well-known fact that any song that starts with a white singer moaning ‘o-o-oh yeah’, trying to sound soulful, is bound to be crap, and this is no exception, bet She Starts laughing shows us a band with definite promise. The lead guitarist sounds like The Edge did when he first started out, and we all know where he is now. Potential for a good band here when they find their own voice.
0 We Free Kings: Oceans 12ln (DOT) Now you've no excuse. The first two We Free Kings singles and thelrfllpsides on one 12 in record. Go and buy it now. And incidentally, the only thing they’ve ever got from The Pogues Is the open ear of the listening, record-buying public. Essential purchase.
0 The Honeymooners: Another Flt Of Laughter (Mr Ridiculous). Hey, garage jazz! Prom Airdne! If you like both early Everything But The Girl and The Primitives, then this could be just the thing you’ve been looking for. Very eason like, now how about some gigs around this way? (Mob)
