UNPAINTED LANDSCAPE

Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh The ‘Unpainted Landscape’ atthe Gallery of Modern Art is a cool one. It feels wintery— has the bare bones of landscape, literally in Chris Drury‘s sphere of deer bones and suggested in Richard Long’s words or Linda Taylor’s giant light box.

Colour when present in this Scottish Arts Council exhibition of fifteen sculptors, photographers and conceptualists, is restrained. Only Andy Goldsworthy’s bright green circle of leaves and herman de vries squares of nibbed earth show any signs of life. The fertility of landscape evidently

The message to rethink our view of nature and the country round about us is clear in individual works. Raymond Moore's photographs show telegraph poles occupying territory and Ian Hamilton Finlay suggests revolution, a renewal in flower pots on pedestals. But the overall impression is rather monochrome, spreading the nature of each thinly on the ground. For those who wish to delve deeper, a book has been published by SAC and Coracle Press to coincide with the exhibition. (Alice Bain)

Nancy Spero Sat 9 May—Sun 14 June. A major retrospective ofthis American artist. The earliest work was made in Paris - large. black. expressionist paintings. ()n returning to America. Spero discovered the country preoccupied with war. A series ofgouaches on Vietnam was her response. In the late Seventies she began painting on scrolls with woman as the central figures on their paper lengths. Recently shown at the [CA in London. this exhibition provides the opportunity to have a long look at the work of this controversial figure. Talk Nancy Spero is joined by her husband Leon Golub and Conrad Atkinson (artist-in-residence at Edinburgh University) and will discuss social and political attitudes in art.
