Pastel drawings ofstrong. story-telling faces. usually taken from Glasgow‘s abundant collection. Cats and Other Creatures Tue S—Sat 30 May. Main have invited youg painters to work around the subject Ofthe cat. a creature important to human symbolism for thousands of years. It is also an animal which has been given in recent years a cliched image by advertising and merchandising. With those two opposites in mind it will be fascinating to see what creatures this exhibition throws up.

The Performance Tue 5—Sat 23 May. Mayfest is a festival ofperformance and the Metro celebrates that focus in a theme exhibition. The invitation to a variety of artists has rooted out hot jazz players from Dominic Snyder. elegant dancers from Scottish Ballet by Pat Dorrian and pastel theatres by Phillip Petherbridge.

Paris, Amsterdam, Berliri— Pochoirs et Graffiti. Photographs by Patrick Martin Mon 4—Tue 12 May. Colourful and exciting graffiti is celebrated in this exhibition of photographs organised as part of the twinning celebrations ofGirvan in Ayrshire and Torcy. a new town near Paris. The graffiti has been created by the citizens of the three European cities which preceded Glasgow as the City of Culture. The exhibition will move to Easterhouse Library on 14 May and will run till 23 May.

The Calton Weavers 1787—1987 From Fri 1 May. The Palace commemorates the shooting ofsix weavers during a wage strike in Glasgow in 1787. Martyrs oftrade unionism. they are being painted in a
major mural by Ken Currie which will grace the dome of the museum. The Weavers panels will be ready in May and by September a full 2009 years of Glasgow life and events will have been added to the work. The first major mural commission from Glasgow District Council since the Banqueting Hall. City Chambers, was completed in the 18905. this project further illustrates the continuing interest in the visual arts during this decade.

Glasgow— Locomotive Builderto the World Mon 4 May—'l'ue 3(lJune. Glasgow is well known for its ship-building. But another industry. now completely disappeared. was arguably as important in the heyday ofsteam travel. Between 1865 and 1962 Glasgowexported 18.000 locomotives to over 60 countries in every continent. In some remote corners of the world. Africa and India. those locos are still in use. a momument to Glasgow‘s workmanship. This exhibition follows the creation of the iron horses from their construction in the works at Springburn and Polmadie to their arrival at ports around the world.
The latest locomotive to come alive in Glasgow has been built not ofsteel but of straw. Scul'.’tor George Wyllie. ofplanet-tickling fame. will parade his Straw Locomotive through the streets on Mon 4 May. beginning at Springburn at l lam. via Springburn
