WDYZECK: SEE WED 13. ‘Btichner would probably turn in his grave,’ says Jon Pope, cheerfully of his new production otthe German playwright’s ‘Woyzeck'.
Alter success with ‘Nosferatu' at the Drama Centre last year, Pope this yearbrings a tilmically conceived, highly visual production of the Expressionist classic, which he describes as ‘playing out the scenes without the chit-chat’. Pope has most recently been in the news for being one otthe three finalists at the BP Young Directors’ Festival, where he directed Jim Kelman's new play, ‘In the Night’, a disturbing piece in which a couple are interrogated in bed. The winner of the festival has yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Pope points out, darkly, that no-one can really criticise his adaptation of ‘Woyzeclt', since no general consensus even exists about the order in which the play’s scenes were originally to appear. . .(Sarah Hemming)
