ZEKE MANYIKA AND DOCTOR L0
Q
Since his days with Orange Juice, Zeke Manyika has never really been accepted in mainstream pop circles, although his ‘Call and Response’ album from a lew years ago received a great deal ol critical acclaim.
1987 has seen Zeke return to Scotland tor a lew live appearances with a new incarnation of his band, Doctor Love, which now consists ol Zeke (vocals/organ), Caroline Buckley (backing vocals, Gary Butcher (guitar), Aubrey Oaki (bass), Juwon Ontube (keyboards) and Mark Ward (drums).
‘I don’t audition people any more,’ said Zeke, when discussing the recruitment ol the band. ‘I used to get all these guys coming in their pinstripe suits straight from their work in a lawyer’s ollice. It was always a bit soul-destroying telling them I didn’t want them. Now I work a lot by ear- ill

see someone that is good I poach them!
‘Aubrey had been working with Hugh Mazekela,’ he explained, ‘and I heard Caroline sing when l was producing material lor Annie Hogan. Gary was a lan, and very enthusiastic, while Mark used to be our tour manager. At the time, we still had Andy Anderson drumming in the band, who has now gone oil to tourwith Iggy Pop.’
While hardly holding a monopoly on headlines in the last lew years, Zeke has nevertheless, been extremely busy. He has worked with Matt Johnston on The The’s superb ‘lnlected' album, and Paul Weller on a cover version at the Isley Brothers’ ‘Harvest For The World‘. ‘Harvest For The World’ will be the first release on the EDSA (Enemie of South Alrica)
label, a label formed by Zeke mainly
VE
lor releasing his own material, although among the other artists in his plans are Clydebank band The Same Animals, whose single ‘Wait’ should be released later in the year.
‘The collaboration with Paul Weller came about alter I had worked with him on the early Style Council records,’ explained Zeke. ‘lt is planned as a showcase record lor EDSA, in the hope that it will create a bit at interest in the label and whatwe are trying to do. The original version at the song has been re-arranged, and we have written some new parts as well.’
With interest in Alrican music currently running at its highest-ever level, thanks to Paul Simon’s ‘Gracelands’ album and the excellent Bhundu Boys, with whom Zeke has recorded, I asked him what be though of the controversy surrounding Simon’s use at South Alrican musicians.
‘Firstly, you have to say that ‘Gracelands’ is an excellent LP, leaturing super musicians,’ he said. ‘But, I must admit that I am disappointed Paul Simon has not used the chance to speak out against apartheid. He sells records to the middle classes, and they are olten the ones most ignorant ol apartheid, and the situation in South Africa.’
Zeke Manyika has always been able to assimilate a wide variety ol diverse sounds into his music, which turns out to be inventive and relreshing. The fruits ol the EDSA label, which is also working with the Zimbabwean Government in setting up a studio there, are to be looked lorward to. (John Williamson)
