,.\\ L MN", The acoustic metal strung guitar has been the folk singer’s chosen instrument since the folk revival began in the post-war years. No other banjo, dulcimer or squeeze box has pushed it from its pedestal. Nowadays though, instrumental virtuosity is evident in the clubs and festivals on any number of fiddles. pipes. harps, flutes, concertinas or tin whistles. Good guitarists are rarer, but four master oi the instrument just happen to be in concert over the next two weeks. John Renbourne and Duck Baker, in Glasgow (29 Apr) and Edinburgh (1 Apr), are enjoying a short Scottish iling as a duo olter a tour together in Germany. American Duck Baker’s effortless fluency and command of styles - playing Irish set dances one minute and ragtime the next- is sadly under recognised. His buddy Renbourne (above) is one at the three Sixties' folk guitar heroes, with Bert Jansch and Davy Graham. Jansch and he became widely known in the early Seventies with the group Pentangle in an early burst of folk/jazz lusion. Renbourne and Baker together is a treat I've yet to bear but will certainly produce superb music even if only the sum of the parts. Dick Gaughan is at Cumbernauld (18 Apr). Love him or not as a singer (and

he‘s just been voted N01 Folk Artist in a UK poll), he is a superb guitarist. His lather had played guitar around Edinburgh when it was still a rareish instrument, usually stuck in the rhythm sectiion. Dne oi Dick's albums, Coppers and Brass, is wholly devoted to instrumental music, mainly Scots/Irish and he sprinkles his concert sets with quite a few guitar pieces. And listen to the intricate runs and chordings under his ballads, ancient or modern.

Isaac Guillory is a strange talent. He can literally play anything on the guitar. An American classical music education was lollowed by years in a successiul rock band, playing piano and bass; a spell with Elkie Brooks; recordings with Donovan; time in a jazz band; playing Brazilian guitar music in a film project with Mick Jagger and visiting the London Guildhall School Dl Music as guest lecturere! His Third Eye Concert last year sold out but he is in Glasgow again, 30 Apr.

Foryet another slant, Edinburgh’s Platform night with Bill Brulord’s Earthworks (17 Apr), also features Glasgow duo Graham Dullin and Nigel Clark who play clever, amusing and tasteful jazz guitar.
