One hundred years after its first performance in St Marylebone Church, London, Stainer‘s The Crucifixion is still going strong. Joined by soloists Brendan MacBride (tenor) and Colin Heggie (bass), Cappella Nova keep up the tradition with two Easter performances. John Turner gives a short recital of organ music for Passiontide immediately preceding the choral performance at 7.30pm.

Edinburgh Grand Opera continue their run of Scotland‘s first performances of Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chenier, a story of love, tyranny and idealism set in the time of the French Revolution. 0 StJohn Passion St Mary’s Cathedral, Palmerston Place. Hitting the peaks of music for this fairly unusual combination of violin, horn and piano in Mozart‘s Trio from the Quintet K407 and the Brahms‘ Trio Op 40. Also on the programme are works by Svendsen, Dukas and Kreisler.

Favourite fairy tale oi many and noe pantomime material at the very best sort, the story at Cinderella has also inspired operas by more than a handful oi unknown composers, including such names as Laruette in 1759, Steibelt in 1810, Conradi (a predecessor of Edinburgh’s most famous music critic?) in 1868 and Buttyltay in 1912. Di the more familiar, Rossini and
Massenet also had a go, the latter’s being the more usually pertormed. Out oi a grand total of 27 operas, Massenet’s Cinderella is one oi the more inlrequently staged. Perhaps Glasgow Grand Opera’s Scottish premiere will set the precedent for change. Cinderella is on at the King’s Theatre Glasgow trom Tues 28 Apr- Sat 2 May (See Listings). (Carol Main).
