PDPU LIST!
McEwan’s Lager ad, wherein an endless number oi oppressed beings push endless rocks uphill while their masters sup the amber nectar in the lap at luxury. The song was ‘You've Got The Power’, their second single, which, like the first and third, unjustly sank without trace. The release ot a fourth single, ‘Super Popoid Groove' and their first LP entitled ‘Uh! Tears Baby (A Trash Icon)’, will hopelully mark an upward trend in the band’s lortunes.
Formed in 1984, and now signed to London Records, Win comprises Davey Henderson (‘I wouldn’t call it playing guitar‘ and vocals), Russell Burn (keyboards), Emmanuel Shinowa (bass and vocals), Simon Smeeton (guitar and vocals) and Ian Stoddart (drums). It’s no secret, though the band are led up with it being mentioned, that Davey and Russell were members at the Fire Engines, one of the best bands everto emerge in Scotland, making crazy, dissonant but tantastic noises. The Fire Engines last single, 3 whole six years ago, showed the direction that Win would take: glossy, brash, modern dance music, with a punch but also with an ottbeat edge at it. All sounds incredibly commercial to me, so why haven'tthey made it yet?
‘You’ve Got The Power’ didn’t get played on Radio One,’ explains Davey. ‘I think it was a bit too all the wall. They don’t like playing things they don’t understand, anything that’s a bit left-ot-centre they’ve got the power to drop. This censorship's coming into every aspect ot broadcasting all the time.’

Although they're not explicitly political , Davey once called Win songs ‘sugar-coated agit-pop’, and he still teels that. ‘I like to think they’ve got a bit at an edge to them. Something interesting within the sounds of the words that registers in people’s consciousness. Nice-sounding things that appeal to things buried in your unconsciousness.’
The things buried within themselves have been spread across the cover of ‘Uh! Tears Baby (A Trash lcon)’. Momentoes oi childhood and heroes, many American, many religious, have
were very serious and showed distinct signs ofbeing U2 fans. OK if you like that sort of thing.

been tormed into a sort oi shrine . . . butto what? It’s momentarily disappointing to discover that a trash icon is actually a computeriunction to dump programmes, but it’s a good pun, as the word trash looms large when Win are around. ‘lt’s very much a 705’ thing, which is where our basic iniluences come from, musically. Very much a nod to the New York Dolls and T Rex, which was considered trashy and disposable, and that’s the kind olthing we're into as well.’
All this and sugar-coated melodies. Where can they go wrong? (Mab)
