riot oi the Revolution to the grim height oi the Reign oi Terror live years later.
Somewhat akin to early Puccini, the music is tlowlng and lyrical, with plenty oi sumptuous melodies, given, more olten than not, (and rather unlairly on the chorus) to the orchestra. Chenier is betrayed, put in prison and finally goes to the guillotine with Maddalena by his side, she having bribed the gaoler to let her swap places with another condemned prisoner.
The role at Andrea Chenier is shared (on a two nights each basis, in common with the other three principal roles) by tenors Robert Crowe and Robin Hills, both past members at Scottish Opera chorus. Edinburgh Grand Opera’s premiere production 01 Andrea Chenier opens at King’s Theatre, Edinburgh on 15 Apr, sung in English. See Listings. (Carol Main).
