0 Carol Kidd meets the Brass Section
Over two successive weeks you have the chance to compare two superb jazz singers, one from the Big Apple and one home grown. Carol Kidds music (Glasgow 20 Mar, Edinburgh 27 Mar) grew out of the trad revival in Scotland and has now soared way beyond it.
MESDUALERD
.- ‘ Sari ,3 :1; f t ‘ A .- 5. 2'.
Sheila Jordan's was ignited hearing Charlie Parker from a small town drugstore juke box. Both have been careful not to slip into the life of full time pro music. But it is getting harder. Both are winning a bigger audience and critical acclaim. Carol Kidd's new
album is released to coincide with the Edinburgh concert, and as in the concert, features commissioned brass arrangements by Adrian Drover performed by a selection of Scotland's top players. She loves these musical excursions from the mainstream — the concerts she gave last year with a string quartet produced some gorgeous results.
Jordan’s favourite accompaniment has for some time been Harvie Swartz’ bass. A most unusual amalgam, brought vividly to life by the uncanny degree of empathy between them and not in the least two-dimensional. Their music is witty, lull of feeling and surprisingly improvised. Sharing the same bill with this queen of singers (Edinburgh 20 Mar) is Mesqualero— in a previous incarnation the Arild Andersen Quintet. their name is taken from an old Wayne Shorter track, a reminder that it would be sensible to purchase tickets in advance for Shorter's Edinburgh concert (10 Apr) in advance as it will undoubtedly sell out.
The five young Norwegians in Mesqualero create one of the most dynamic sounds in what's become known as the European stream of jazz. Bassist Andersen and drummerJon Christensen are the rhythmic engine , fuelling the soloists, in particular Nils Petter Molvaer, a splendidly controled yet imaginatively uninhibited trumpet player. Certain to be one of the best concerts of the year. (Norman Chalmers)
