Coinciding exactly with his 73rd birthday, ’cellist Paul Tortelierappears with the SNO in a rare double-header partnered by his wife Maud, also a ’cellist. Leading six of the SNO’s players from its own 'cello section. they perform Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras Nos 1 and 5, joined by the soprano Maureen Brathwaite. Dedicated to J. s. Bach, Villa-Lobos, born 100 years ago this year, also draws inspiration from the folk music of his native Brazil — hence the title. Well-known lor his infectious exuberance, not only in music but in
