This extensive exhibition at the gallery's permanent collection, reveals it to be an impressive cross section at Scottish pictures and sculpture. It makes a huge sweep oI Scottish painting Irom the 18th century to the present day and broad themes ol development can be traced. In landscape painting lor example the 18th century works show good examples oi Claude's iniluence through Nasmyth, typically using a tree in the loreground to Irame an open-vista beyond. The colours, especially in McWhirter's Edinburgh lrom Corstorphine, graduate according to an Italian scheme lrom warm loreground tones, through a cooler middleground to blue in the distance. The approach to nature changes with the 19th century McTaggart, known as the ‘iather or Scottish painting’, with a noticeable loosening ol technique and increased robustness. Hornel and Henry later Ilatten the space into a decorative surtace with their suddenly-bold colours and anti- naturalistic approach, while the turn oi the century Colourists painted a
