From Germany, naturally enough, and to say they‘ve been influenced by Siouxsie And The Banshees is to understate things more than a little. One great pop single, Matador, produced by Hugh Cornwell, does not an exciting proposition make.

Love them or hate them the Love And Money phenomenon is a strange one. Signed to a major and successful record label, with huge promotional budgets to help them they have still to approach the level at success reached by labelmates Hipsway, Swing Out Sister or Curiosity Killed The Cat, and they are three singles and one album into their recording career. Some people may smile and rub their hands at the thought at a band with such a high proiile being what appears on the suriace to be a iailure.
Witness a Love And Money gig in Glasgow though, and you would think you were at a Wham! concert. T-shirts and sweatshirts bearing the Love And Money logo are sold in large numbers, girls throw bras on stage while staring
£1.50, guests £2). 9pm. Dismissed by some as Stiff Little Fingers throwback, their Little Circles mini~LP showed they’ve got a vitality all their own. Big things for them this year, I hope.

LOVE AND MONEY
at the unlikely and hysterical hip-thrusting oi irontman James Grant. It is not only girls though, as a large crowd oi teenage males also seem to enjoy proceedings- the sell-same Mr Grant also enjoying status as a bit oi a guitar-hero. The audience's response is amazing, and encores go on long past the majority oi the audience’s bed-time. Even the Scottish element at the music press seems to associate with the band, meaning that their claims to be Scotland’s most popular band at the moment, excluding Simple Minds, who no longer have much relation with their hometown, are not wild exaggerations.
In England though, things are diiierent. Tickets tor a gig at Galashiels sold out in tour days. Fiity miles down the road in Newcastle, they struggle to

sell 250 tickets. The situation is similar with the press: ‘A lot oi the journalists that like us are Scottish,’ says James, ‘and a lot oi the ones that hate us are English. I think this is because much at the English music press is biased - they think the centre oi the universe is the Wag Club. And they generalise too much without actually experiencing a band. Most oi them are only there tor the pose . . .
Scotland has given us what we really deserve. lthlnk people really like us — but I think we deserve it,’ he continues. ‘In Scotland we can sell out the Pavilion — but I suppose Scheme sold it out as well.
It is an interesting idea though, as their manager views the band as a ‘peopie's band' in the tradition at Alex Harvey, or the pre-megastardom Simple Minds. it may well be that their appeal is a mixture at their backgrounds, with the escapism and glamour (7) presented in their live shows that makes them so popular in Sconand.
Alter selling out the Pavilion in December, they have almost done the same-at the time at writing —iorthelr outing at Glasgow Barrowland on Saturday. Three thousand people to
see a band with no chart record is unprecedented, and despite the disappointing showing oi their current single, ‘Biver Di People' they are still optimistic about the iuture. The next single, and final track to be released irom the album is a radically diiierent remix oi the song ‘Love And Money’ which, apparently, is more like the Beastie Boys than the Blow Monkeys, and lingers are crossed that it will be iourth time lucky.
