BATTLEFIELO BAND

The Battlefield Band are back in the studios outside Edinburgh rehearsing a new album, squeezed in between Scottish concert dates (Edinburgh 22 Feb). Brian McNeil, with liddle in photo, is led up being asked about synthesisers in lolk music, a legacy at having sold themselves as the band that broke down barriers, mixing bagpipes with guitar and bringing in synths and drum machines. Nowadays a DX7 is a traditional instrument, and will be titted in between solo accordion and tiddling at this year’s Auchtermuchty Festival Competitions. Battlelield sell their pop/lolk music well, America proving their biggest market, and they are all there in March, starting the yearly round at international dates. Their audience is increasing in Australia, and Brian looks forward to the group’s tirst trip to Finland later this year. Moves are also atoot to take the band into the Soviet Union. but the wheels grind slowly.

Though still rooted in traditional

lorms, the group’s music continues to change, Dougie Pincock playing saxophone onstage some at the time instead ol the bagpipe, and keyboard playerAlan Reid is singing more of his own compositions. Brian too has been writing a lot, andnotiust songs. He has completed a novel.‘ . . . my agent is taking it round publishers at the moment.’ Would it have anything to do with the talk scene? ‘Well, the main character plays the riddle, but he's a busker— it’s called The Busker, but it’s a thriller.’ Now there’s a constructive use at all that time spent hanging around airport departure lounges. Last year a song written by Brian came second in a British songwriting competition judged by among others Melvyn Bragg. It is being arranged at the moment tor the new album. The title? The Roving Dies Hard.
