FILM LIST
awakening memories of past pleasures, it’s a dream of a film. Edinburgh; Filmhouse
0 True Stories (PG) (David Byrne, US, 1986) David Byrne, Spalding Gray, John Goodman. 88 mins. Writer/Director/Star and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne is our guide to the mythical small Texas town of Virgil and its variously charming and idiosyncratic inhabitants - ranging from a bachelor offering himself as a TV-advertised husband, a woman who hasn’t left her bed in years, and a mysterious black shaman.
Byrne is evidently attempting to create a kind of non-narrative fiction where lots of peculiar little details from domestic America sketch a fuller picture of a time and a place. The agile viewer has to piece it all together (pseudo-documentary narration sits side by side with state of the art pop video techniques) and some may find the film’s gentle humour a little too underwhelming for its own good, but it’s as intelligently smile-provoking a piece as Hollywood has produced in a while. Edinburgh; Filmhouse O Uliisses (Werner Nekes, West Germany, 1980-2) Described as an odyssey through the history of cinema, Nekes‘ film draws together characters from Homer’s Odysseus, Joyce’s Ulysses and Neil Oram’s Telemach/Phil to make an analogy between their story and that of film. Glasgow; German Cine-Club
0 Under Fire (15) (Roger Spottiswoode, US, 1983) Nick Nolte, Joanna Cassidy 127 mins. Excellent war drama refuses to turn into romantic slush or gung-ho heroics. but concentrates instead on the question ofpersonal commitment and the power of images whilst maintaining a vice-like grip. Highly recommended. Glasgow; GET 0 When the Wind Blows (PG) (Jimmy T. Murakami, UK, 1986) With the voices of Peggy Ashcroft and John Mills. 85 mins. Five-star animation enlivens this otherwise monotonous and talkative version of the Raymond Briggs book in which an impossibly naive elderly couple face the challenge of the nuclear age with the same spirit that brought them happily through the blitz. Glasgow; ABC Clarkston Road, ABC Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh; Cameo. Lothian; ABC. Strathclyde; ABC Greenock, ABC Kilmarnock 0 Yellow Earth (PG) (Chen Kaige, . China, 1984) Xue Bai, Wang Xeqm. 89 mins. Kaige‘s extraordinary film debut feature centres on the clash between the traditional values and rituals of a remote mountain tribe and the new-fangled ideologies of a Communist soldier sent in 1939 to study peasant culture.
Edinburgh; Edinburgh Film Guild 0 Zlna (15) (Ken McMullen, UK, 1985) Domiziana Giordano, Philip Madoc, Ian McKelIen. 93 mins. Ambitious film focusing on the obsessions of Trotsky‘s unhinged daughter as she unburdens herself to McKellen‘s neo-Freudian psychiatrist. Glasgow; GFT
